Malcolm Yuen



Malcolm Yuen completed his initial musical training in Violin at the Victorian College of the Arts, Australia and worked with conductors, Hiroyuki Iwaki, John Georgiadis, and Nicolas Braithwaite in performances and recordings on ABC FM, before directing his time exclusively to conducting. He began his initial conducting training with Robert Rosen (Melbourne) prior to his selection by Jorma Panula (Sibelius Academy, Finland) to join the Symphony Australia Conductor Development Programme before continuing his studies in the UK, and Central Europe studying further with Alan Hazeldine (Guildhall School, London), Johannes Schlaefli (Berner Kammerorchester, Switzerland), Robert Stankovsky, and Milen Nachev (National Radio Orchestra, Bulgaria).

Malcolm Yuen has toured in the United Kingdom, Austria, Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary and Bulgaria and has appeared as Guest Conductor with orchestras including the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra, Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra (Czech Republic), the Bourgas Opera/ Philharmonic, Plovdiv State Opera (Bulgaria), the Vratza State Philharmonic Orchestra and many orchestras in Australia. Apart from an extensive symphonic repertoire, his operatic repertoire also includes VerdI's La Traviata, Il Trovatore and Rigoletto, Mozart's Die Zauberflšte , Don GiovannI, Cosi Fan Tutte, Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and Bizet's Carmen.

In addition Malcolm Yuen has recorded for film and television; in 1991 working on the Russell Crowe feature film "Romper Stomper"; in 1995 the highly acclaimed mini series Halifax f. p for Network GTV Nine and other work with Network Nine Special Projects, Australia. In the contemporary field, he has worked with artists ranging from jazz pianist, Paul Grabowsky, to the cult Melbourne group "Hunters & Collectors".

Malcolm Yuen is a strong advocate in the development of youth and community music. In 2006, he was only the second conductor in 32 years to be appointed to the position of Principal Conductor & Musical Director of the Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra, Melbourne and has prepared and conducted projects for Melbourne Youth Music, Australia, Education Victoria, Melbourne Strings Festival (as Chief Adjudicator), and with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Outreach Programme.
